Apple’s Next Big Product Reveal to Take Place on March 15
It’s been a pretty big couple of weeks for technology juggernaut Apple. At the end of January, the company had plenty to shout about as it posted record figures for Q1 of the 2016 financial year. With a net income of $18.4 billion for the quarter, the company somehow still growing, despite how much money it already makes. Earlier this week, however, Apple’s position as the world’s biggest company was in jeopardy as a stock price increase for Google’s parent company Alphabet saw it temporarily take the top spot.
While Alphabet is predicted to overtake Apple for a longer period of time in the next few months, Apple will soon be giving its investors something to smile about. According to BuzzFeed News, which has spoken to “sources in position to know,” the next big Apple product reveal will take place on March 15. The publication explains that this event, which takes place on the third Tuesday in March, will be a smaller one than the last (which was held at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco) and expects it to be at Apple’s Town Hall in Cupertino, California.
Although the event (which is yet to be officially confirmed) may be quieter than the Internet-breaking reveals of flagship devices, the iPhone 6S and the 6S Plus, Apple should still have plenty of announcements in store. The product that we are most likely to see is the highly rumored 4-inch iPhone. While no one has been able to figure out what the downsized handset will be called (Apple itself is said to have changed the name several times), this iPhone will be positioned as an ‘entry level’ device, and as an alternative for those who find the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus far too large for their smaller hands.
Moreover, it’s being said that it will offer 2GB of RAM and the A9 processor and will cost $500. While these specs and the phone itself are obviously just speculation (for now), it’s worth noting that Apple recently decreased its orders for iPhone 6S and 6S Plus parts, which is another big indication that a new iPhone model is on the way.
Also expected at this March 15 event is a brand new iPad Air. While far less rumors have been floating around about the iPad Air 3, the device is said to have similar features to the iPad Pro, such as improved speakers and a ‘Smart Connector,’ which would allow the device to be used with accessories like the iPad Pro keyboard. The iPad Pro (which was released in November) hasn’t improved the iPad line’s declining sales, so it’s unclear whether the iPad Air 3 will be successful.
Admittedly, these products aren’t particularly ‘showy’ and it’s certainly not the innovation that many have been asking for (this same lack of innovation is why some say Alphabet will take the ‘biggest company’ title away from Apple for longer in future). However, true innovation (such as Apple’s rumored VR/AR headset) is apparently in the works, so the same ol’, same ol’ will have to suffice for now.
