MWC 2016: 4 Announcements You May Have Missed
Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, is one of the mobile industry’s biggest events. This year, MWC 2016 was no different as we saw flagship smartphones from both LG and Samsung. But, the LG G5 and the Samsung Galaxy S7 weren’t the only huge announcements from the event and so to recap what was another exciting showing, here’s our list of four announcements that you may have missed.
1. Samsung’s Gear 360 Camera
Samsung has already dabbled with virtual reality with the Gear VR headset, but this week the company went one further, by announcing the Gear 360 camera. The eyeball shaped device has two F/2.0 fisheye lenses and can capture video at 3840×1920, with processing handled by the S7 and the S7 Edge. Videos can also be stored on a microSD card of up to 128GB.
Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg was also present at the Samsung press conference to let people know that VR videos will load faster on Facebook.
2. HTC’s New Desire Smartphones
Although many smartphone makers chose MWC to unveil flagships, HTC instead used the event to show off its new mid-range phones. The HTC Desire 530, 630 and 825 were all announced and will be released in March.
The Desire 825 has a 5.5-inch LCD screen with a 720p resolution along with a quad-core Snapdragon 400 chipset and 2GB of RAM. It also has 16GB of internal storage and it sports a microSD card slot and a 13 megapixel camera (rear) and 5 megapixel camera (front) too. The 630 has similar specs to the 825, though it has a smaller screen (5 inches), and a smaller battery (2,200 mAh).
And finally, the HTC Desire 530 has a 5-inch 720p screen, with the Snapdragon 210 chipset and just 1.5GB of RAM. Its rear camera is also 8 megapixels, while the camera up front is 5 megapixels.
3. Lenovo’s New Windows 10 Devices
Lenovo’s biggest announcements were its new hybrid Windows 10 devices: the YOGA 710, the YOGA 510, and the ideapad MIIX 310.
The YOGA 710 is available as either an 11-inch or 14-inch device (intel Core m5 and Core i7 processors respectively) with an FHD (1920×1080) screen, an eight hour battery life and four different positions to put it in. The YOGA 510 is also flexible and is available with Core i7 processors in either a 14 inch or 15 inch version. And finally, the ideapad MIIX 310 is a tablet with a detachable keyboard that offers up to 10 hours of battery and an optional FHD display.
4. Sony Xperia X and Xperia XA
Sony took to MWC 2016 to unveil its “higher than mid-range” handsets the Sony Xperia X and the Xperia XA. The Xperia X is 5 inches and has 3GB of RAM with a Snapdragon 650 chipset and a microSD card slot of up to 200GB. The Xperia XA, on the other hand, is 5 inches with 2GB of RAM and a Mediatek MT6755 Helio P10 chipset, along with a microSD card slot of up to 200GB.
Both phones will go on sale this summer.
